Matrix

The surface that holds the image before it becomes a print. For example: a copper plate for etching, limestone or aluminum for lithography, a mesh screen for silkscreen, a carved block for woodblock.

Whatever it is, it gets inked, pressed to paper, and then — once the edition is done — cancelled.
